What he has done, Who he is (2 Samuel 7:18-29)
Read 📖
Today’s reading is 2 Samuel 7:18-29
Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
2 Samuel 7:22
Reflect ❤️
After Nathan delivers God’s great covenant with David - to build David a house and give him an everlasting dynasty - David goes to be alone with the Lord in prayer. And David is amazed.
Amazed of what God has done in his life… that God chose him, though he was the youngest and least experienced of seven brothers, watching sheep graze in the field, to make him a king.
Amazed at what he has done for the nation… for redeeming a people from slavery in Egypt, giving them a land and making them his very own.
Amazed at who God is… a God who cannot be compared to any other and that no other nation can boast of.
As David praises God for what he has done, it leads him to worship God for who he is.
What do we learn about who God is from David's prayer? He is the God with command over all of history, who declares that King David will have a lasting dynasty (v 19), a dynasty that we are a part of to this very day! He is the God who knows our hearts and true intentions (v 20). He is the God who fulfils His promises which are good and true (v 21). He is the God who rescues and redeems His people from slavery to be His own (v 23). What a God David worshipped! What a God we have!
Pray 🙏
These promises are as true today as when God first declared them over King David three thousand years ago. Let us praise God for what he has done, and allow that to praise him for who he is. And then in boldness let us bring to him our prayers.
In our lives, where has God been faithful in times of trouble? Where has God stood by us when we have let him down? When has God blessed us when we have done nothing to deserve it? Let us praise our great God.
Where do we need to know that he is the God in command over our own history? Where must we have faith that he fulfils all his promises, despite appearances? Where do we need to cry out as we trust that he rescues his children? Let us pray in confidence, knowing who our God is.
Let us look to Jesus, the great Davidic King, the true fulfilment of all the promises of God. And as we remember what he did - on the cross - let it bring us to worship for who he is.
We thank you Lord that you are sovereign and that your promises are steadfast and true. Thank you that we now get to live in direct relationship with you due to the promises you spoke over David of a lasting dynasty through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Amen
