As Christians, when we pick up our Bibles we have the wonderful privilege of reading from beginning to end this incredible storyline of Redemptive History, seeing how God has worked through time and history to fulfill his purpose. And as yesterday we saw God’s promises made to David, today we look at how God fulfilled those promises centuries later.

The Davidic Covenant becomes foundational for understanding the identity and mission of Christ. God promises that He will fulfill His covenant in four ways, which we see unfold in the New Testament:

  • First, Jesus is the promised seed (v12). Matthew opens his Gospel with the words: “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham” (Matt. 1:1).

  • Second, Jesus is the ultimate Son of God (v14). The author of Hebrews applies 2 Samuel 7:14 directly to Christ “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son” (Heb. 1:5).

  • Third, Jesus fulfills the covenant by dealing with sin through suffering (v14-15). Isaiah foretold the coming Messiah, the suffering servant: “He was pierced for our transgressions” (Isa. 53:5). Paul later declares, “...God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised” (Acts 13:23).

  • Finally, Jesus is the eternal King (v13). Gabriel announces to Mary: “The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David…his kingdom will never end” (Luke 1:32–33).

The Davidic Covenant offers peace, security, and purpose in Christ, but it also gives us a lens through which we can read Scripture. The Psalms are one of the clearest places where we see the promises expressed in worship, prayer, and hope. David looked forward to the coming King through the covenant promises, while we look back to their fulfillment in Christ. Because we are united in Christ, these promises now shape how we understand the Psalms. When David declares "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?" (Ps. 27), he does so with complete confidence in God and his promises. We too can rest in that same confidence because Christ has fulfilled the covenant perfectly.

Pray 🙏

Lord, thank you for the promises you made to David and their fulfilment in Christ. Promises that give peace, hope and, above all, reconciliation with You. Thank you Jesus for the incredible sacrifice and suffering you endured for our sake. You are the Name above all Names, King of Kings, and Lord of all. May live with these truths in our hearts. Amen
