On our side (2 Samuel 2)

Today’s reading is 2 Samuel 2

In the course of time, David inquired of the LORD. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked.

The LORD said, “Go up.”

David asked, “Where shall I go?”

“To Hebron,” the LORD answered.

2 Samuel 2:1

Reflect ❤️

The opening of this chapter sets up a clear contrast between David and what remains of Saul’s house. Abner—who will play a significant role in the chapters to come—enters the narrative, along with one of Saul’s surviving sons, Ish-Bosheth.

Three key contrasts emerge in these opening verses. First, David settles in Hebron, while the remnants of Saul’s house withdraw to Mahanaim. Second, David is anointed king over Judah, whereas Ish-Bosheth is made king by Abner. Third, the Lord is directing David’s steps, while Abner is the driving force behind Ish-Bosheth.

The narrative shifts to Abner and Joab, a story line that will run through David's reign to his son Solomon’s reign. It starts with a battle by the Pools of Gibeon. 12 men from David's side, 12 men from Saul's side. Perfectly matched - they all fall. On a human level they are equal. The next day a battle breaks out and Saul's army is defeated before David's army. What appears equal in human terms is broken when God is at work.

With Abner and his army in retreat, the narrative focuses on the fatal encounter between Abner and Asahel. Despite Abner's plea, Ashahel’s persistence ends in his tragic death - a moment that will ripple through the chapters that follow.

We can see from the closing verses the strength of David's army with the Lord behind him - 19 servants of David were missing, whilst 360 of Saul's had fallen. The balance has been tipped, the once humanly equal sides, one now has a Divine backing.

Pray 🙏

God will work not only in our character but in our situations. Is there an opportunity you're pursuing and need his favour? We can go forward in faith that He is faithful, sovereign, a God that sees and hears us. Use this time to pause, reflect and pray.

Lord, you are a faithful God. You have our plans in your hands. We recognise the only thing that is different between us and those who don't know you, is you. You are the God that guides our path, and even when we can't see it you are working. May we go forward seeking your guidance, and see you as the faithful, and sovereign King. Amen
