My Rock and My Redeemer (Psalm 3)

Read 📖

Today’s reading is the whole of Psalm 3

“But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,

my glory, and the lifter of my head.”

Psalm 3:3

Reflect ❤️

David writes this psalm while on the run from Absalom. As we have read over this week—this was not a high point in David’s life. And yet, even in this hard point of life, David can still write a psalm like this, proclaiming how God protects and sustains him while also praying for salvation and relief from his enemies.

The Psalm opens with David looking at his situation—being violently pursued by his son, but then focuses on who God is and what He has done. Throughout the psalm, David will declare what the Lord has done for him, which gives him confidence in God intervening in his present circumstances. Through this focus on who God is and His unchanging character, David has faith that God will deliver him.

We should always look to God in difficult circumstances; God is faithful, and He will always comfort and sustain us through them. God is the same as He always has been. So, we can be encouraged that even when our circumstances are bad, God is faithful. And we have a greater hope than David, a greater demonstration of God’s unchanging character—Jesus. Through Jesus, we have a greater source of peace and security, because of what He has done for us.

This means that we can focus on God and who He is, rather than our situation. Let us not be defined by our circumstances, but instead remember God’s grace and faithfulness which has been demonstrated in Jesus.

Pray 🙏

Thank you Lord that you are constant. Thank you that even in difficult circumstances, you are still faithful. Help me to rely on your faithfulness and grace rather than be defined by my situation.
