Entering Jerusalem (2 Samuel 5)

Read đź“–

Today’s reading is the whole of 2 Samuel 5

And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

Matthew 21:9-11 (ESV)

Reflect ❤️

David is finally King over all Israel and his crowning achievement is Jerusalem. Jerusalem at the time was one of the cities still holding out against Israelite rule, and so David entered Jerusalem as a conquering King. God had called the people to inhabit the land, and so King David was doing what an Israelite King was meant to do.

But Jesus, in Matthew 21, enters in a very different way.

While Jesus is recognised by the crowd as “Son of David”, Jesus is no warrior. David enters as a conqueror, Jesus “humble, and mounted on a donkey”. David is surrounded by an army, Jesus by disciples. David brought the sword, but Jesus good news. David took life, Jesus gave his up.

Jesus is the Son of David, the king who will reign forever, but He is the greater David.

Pray 🙏

Lord Jesus, Thank you that you are the great King. Thank you that you are humble, that you give life, that you came to save. Teach us to follow in your ways of sacrificial love. Amen
